Studies have shown that taking children to museums from an early age, especially museums that are focused on an educational aspect, can stimulate their intrinsic learning motivation and critical thinking skills. These skills, when developed early on, can help the child become more successful later in life. Even for others besides children, a museum can be helpful for the practice of critical thinking skills and learning new things. Past the learning required for school, learning new material helps to keep your mind elastic, and build new neuron pathways, which help your mental functions overall. With all this evidence pointing to the positive attributes of a science museum, we are left with the question: Why doesn't Carlsbad have one of its own? Now, it may be true that some museums exist in Carlsbad, but none are so dedicated to STEAM topics or fields, with the closest major science museum being the Fleet Science Center, all the way down in San Diego. A local science museum, one that is easily accessible and involved in the community in several ways, with a specific focus on bringing STEAM topics to every generation, could overall make our community a better place.
