In-Person Class Format Concerns related to COVID Response
We students from the Class of 2025 would like to formally convey our concern with the required in-person class format that has been chosen for ECM and FCT this semester in light of Omicron, the most transmissible strain of COVID to date. We feel conflicted with the decision to not have classes be primarily virtual at this time as it seems to go against what we are being taught about medical responsibility. As our peers are coming back from travelling across the country, with many not even having the opportunity to receive COVID tests prior to attending our in-person classes, we feel it would be more appropriate to have virtual classes at this time, or at least mandate prior testing. Additionally, the current in-person format lacks inclusivity and accessibility for many of our classmates who were not able to attend today due to known COVID exposures, uncertainty of their COVID status, and/or their relation to immunocompromised individuals. As there is no option for them to attend virtually, these classmates missed, and will continue to miss vital information. Moreover, after hearing from course facilitators who share our concerns, it seems there are many sessions in these next few weeks that could be virtual without any major changes to how the class is taught otherwise. We know there are many factors the administration is most likely striving to effectively balance behind the scenes in making these decisions, but at the very least, we are asking for more transparency on this issue as we feel our safety is being unnecessarily compromised. Ideally, we would like the ECM large group sessions and the FCT session to not be required in-person, and to be completely virtual, or at least have a virtual option for those unable to attend. We understand you all have most likely considered these options, however we feel it is imperative to reconsider at this point given the increased risk the rapidly spreading Omicron COVID strain poses. We hope to not greatly inconvenience you all with our call for swift action, however we believe our shared value in the safety of our community and responsibility in appropriately responding to this pandemic as leaders in healthcare necessitates a reassessment of the precautions we are taking.
