Animal agriculture is responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, more than the combined exhaust from all transportation. Livestock is also responsible for 20%-33% of all fresh water consumption and covers 45% of the earth’s total land. Red meat specifically requires 28 times more land to produce than pork or chicken, 11 times more water and results in five times more climate-warming emissions.
In-N-Out Burger purchases meat from one of the largest concentrated factory farms in California, Harris Ranch. Hundreds of thousands of cows can be seen crowded, living in their own excrement, and being raised on GMO corn. The antibiotics and growth hormones from these cows have been linked to increased risk of cancer and antibiotic-resistant infections.
Through offering a meatless patty, In-N-Out Burger will offer a plant based alternative to red meat. They will be able to follow in the footsteps of other fast food restaurants, such as Carl's Jr., who have begun launching meatless burgers.
