What is Shark Finning?
It is the removal of fins from sharks, often while the shark is alive. The sharks are usually thrown back into the ocean while still alive, but without their fins. Unable to swim effectively, they sink to the bottom of the ocean and die of suffocation or are eaten by other predators.
Not only is the finning of sharks barbaric, but their indiscriminate slaughter at an unsustainable rate is pushing many species of sharks to the brink of extinction. Since the 1970s, the populations of several species, such as Blacktip, Tiger, Bull, Dusky, and Smooth Hammerhead sharks have been decimated by over 90%. Already, 18-20 species of sharks are listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Sharks, as an important species, help the oceans maintain an important balance by keeping the populations of smaller fish in check. If sharks were to become extinct, it would spell disaster for ocean ecosystems worldwide, as the food supply for smaller fish wouldn't be able to meet the ever increasing demand!
Why Should Shark Fin Importation Be Banned in the City of Mississauga?
By implementing an import ban, Mississauga will show global leadership in the fight to stop the harmful practice of shark finning and end our role in the trade of fins from threatened and endangered sharks. Through this act, other cities, in and outside of Canada, may find the will to do their part in banning shark fin importation.
Unfortunately, time for the world's shark populations is quickly running out. Please sign and share the petition to tell Canada's leaders to ban the trade of shark fins nationwide and take a big step in preserving the world's vital oceans.
It is the time to take a bite out of the shark fin trade once and for all!
