Improve the signage and road markings for lanes from Glenview Road to West Coast Rd

The issue

Dear Auckland Transport,

Subject: Petition for Improved Signage and Road Markings at Glenview Road and West Coast Road Railway Crossing intersection

We, the undersigned residents and frequent commuters of the Glen Eden area, hereby submit this petition to express our deep concern regarding the inadequate signage and road markings at the railway crossing from Glenview Road to West Coast Road. This particular intersection, where both lanes can turn right and the left lane can turn left onto West Coast Road, has become increasingly hazardous due to insufficient traffic guidance.

Key Issues Identified:

Inadequate Signage: Current signage does not clearly indicate lane usage and turning options over and past the railway crossing. This confusion often leads to vehicles in the right lane moving into the middle lane to still turn right, causing dangerous situations and potential collisions.
Poor Road Markings: The road markings that guide traffic flow are unclear and non existent over the tracks, leading to vehicles not adhering to their designated lanes. This is particularly problematic when the traffic lights turn red, resulting in unpredictable backups over the tracks and near-miss incidents.
Safety Risks: The lack of clear directional guidance causes cars to cut off others or to be stopped unexpectedly on the tracks, creating significant safety hazards for drivers.
To address these critical issues and enhance the safety and efficiency of this crossing, we propose the following measures:

Enhanced Signage: Install prominent, reflective signs on the traffic light post before the railway crossing, clearly indicating lane usage: that both lanes can turn right and the left lane can turn left. This will help drivers make informed decisions well in advance of the intersection.

Mock up of slight on light post

Improved Road Markings: Repaint and maintain road markings using durable, reflective paint to delineate lanes clearly and guide vehicles correctly. Adding clear arrows on the road surface indicating the permitted movements for each lane and having lane lines over the tracks will further assist in reducing confusion.

By implementing these improvements, Auckland Transport would significantly reduce the risk of accidents and near misses at this critical intersection. These changes are essential for the safety and well-being of our community and all road users.

We, the undersigned, urge Auckland Transport to prioritize this matter and take swift action to address these safety concerns. The proposed measures will greatly enhance the safety and efficiency of the Glenview Road and West Coast Road railway crossing.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
