Improve Safety Measures in Multistorey Carparks to Prevent Suicides

Improve Safety Measures in Multistorey Carparks to Prevent Suicides
The Issue
Along with many cherished friends, struggle with mental health issues. We've witnessed first-hand the devastation that a suicide brings not only to family members, but friends and the wider community as well. We have to act!
Currently, the multistorey carparks in Scunthorpe town centre and other areas across North Lincolnshire are easily accessible platforms for those considering taking their own lives. The grim reality is that they have become inadvertent hotspots for suicide attempts.
Suicide rates have been escalating across the UK, with North Lincolnshire witnessing a 25% increase between 2017 and 2018 alone. This condition is alarmingly high, especially among those with mental health problems, indicating an urgent need to reinforce preventive measures. Unfortunately, multistorey carparks are among the most common places where these tragedies occur.
Our plea is a call to local authorities in North Lincolnshire: it’s time to implement integral safety measures in these carparks. This could include erecting higher protective barriers, employing trained security personnel or installing emergency helpline phones. Successful implementations in other cities show that these measures can indeed serve as critical deterrents for those considering suicide.
No one should feel so desperate and alone with their pain that they consider ending their life, particularly in a public space such as a car park. Let's ensure our spaces are safe, and that help is available for those in crisis.
We cannot standby and watch as our neighbours, friends, and family members suffer. It's time for change, and that change begins with all of us signing this petition. Make your voice heard. It's time to prevent suicides. Sign this petition to call on our local authorities to take immediate action.
