Read the Lakanal Report
Jun 18, 2017 — I have now been directed to available copies of the Lakanal Report online. The inquest report contains some upsetting findings, so I suggest reading with caution. See details below.
When the findings came out in 2013, the Department for Communities and Local Government gave councils the OPTION whether or not to implement them. The result was that few fully implemented the recommendations. Had the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea done so, Grenfell would have been fitted with sprinklers, and the cladding would have been fire resistant.
Southwark Council, where Lakanal happened, also decided not to put in sprinklers in blocks, stating that it was because they would have to get permission from leaseholders. However, I am a leaseholder in Southwark, and was not given an option not to accept rewiring into my flat when the Council put it in. Why were they not willing to do the same with sprinklers? Why did they not put sprinklers in communal areas?
Ask your council for their response to Lakanal, which they should have completed in 2013 as directed by the DCLG.
