Ontario is currently facing a severe housing crisis, and rent control is a necessary policy to protect tenants from sudden and unreasonable rent increases that could lead to displacement or financial hardship. The current rent control policy only applies to buildings constructed before November 15, 2018, leaving many renters vulnerable to unaffordable rent increases.

Landlords operating without rent control only worsen the crisis. The current system incentivizes them to neglect repairs or evict long-term tenants. Also, no vacancy control allows them to raise rents as much as they want. These loopholes have contributed to the rise in rent, making it hard for vulnerable groups to access safe and affordable housing.

We cannot continue to allow landlords to take advantage of vulnerable renters. Implementing rent control for all units in Ontario is essential to ensure that all renters have equal access to safe and affordable housing. Rent control would provide stability and predictability for tenants, allowing them to plan for their housing costs and avoid sudden financial shocks. It would also help to protect tenants from paying rent beyond what is reasonable.

We urge the Premier of Ontario and the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing to take immediate action to expand rent control in Ontario to all rental units. This is a crucial step to prevent an increase in homelessness and housing insecurity among the most vulnerable populations in our province.
