As a single parent of three children living in Saskatoon, I am personally experiencing the struggle of rising rental costs. This is not just my story; it's the story of many families and individuals in our city. The cost of living, including food and rent, is becoming increasingly unaffordable for many residents.

It has come to our attention that property companies and private owners from Eastern Canada are buying homes here and renting them out at rates three times higher than their purchase prices. This practice is not only exploitative but also unsustainable for residents who are already struggling to make ends meet.

We propose that City Hall and the provincial government implement a cap on rental prices to protect residents from these exorbitant increases. In 2018, British Columbia implemented a similar measure limiting annual rental increases to inflation plus 2% [source: Government of British Columbia]. We believe such an approach would be beneficial for Saskatoon as well.

This petition calls upon our local leaders to take immediate action on this pressing issue. It's time we prioritize the welfare of our community members over excessive profits.
