The Issue

Working closely with victims of sexual offenses has opened my eyes to the devastating impact of these crimes. I have witnessed the pain, the trauma, and the long road to recovery that many victims face. A glance into the eyes of someone whose life has been forever changed is a powerful reminder that we must do everything in our power to protect future potential victims.

Currently, Canada lacks a publicly accessible national sex offender registry. This means that citizens can't quickly verify if someone in their community with access to vulnerable people has a history of sexual offenses. Other countries, like the United States, have implemented such a registry to assist communities in making informed decisions and ensuring public safety. It's time Canada follows suit.

Statistics from Public Safety Canada show that, on average, around 22,000 incidents of sexual assault are reported to police annually. However, the majority of sexual offenses remain unreported, further emphasizing the need for enhanced preventive measures.

A national sex offender registry would not only serve as a tool for law enforcement but would empower citizens to be proactive about their safety and the safety of their children. Experience from our neighbors proves that awareness and access to crucial information is a step toward prevention.

The proposed registry would include names, photographs, physical descriptions, and offenses committed by individuals convicted of sexual offenses. To protect privacy, safeguards could be put in place to ensure that this information is used responsibly.

Join us in urging the Canadian government to prioritize the safety and security of its citizens by implementing a national sex offender registry. This initiative could prevent countless future crimes and provide much-needed peace of mind to individuals and families nationwide.

Please sign this petition and help us work towards a safer Canada for everyone.
