On April 11, the New Zealand government decided to institute a travel ban that stopped NZ Indian citizens from being able to return home. While that ban has been lifted, COVID has continued to rage across the country and hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost.
In this time, many airlines have cancelled flights and have refused to fly people home, while those that do offer flights are charging exorbitant amounts of money. This situation is simply untenable for hundreds of people.
This government has done the bare minimum in providing support for India. The least it can do is arrange charter planes to get our people home and back to safety, which is their basic human right.
This government has touted itself as one that centres compassion and kindness, but it has shown that help is only offered to a select few.
While a charter plane was provided for cricketers - presumably because they contribute to New Zealand's public image and have monetary value - the rest of our people have been left to fend for themselves, separated from their families, with no access to healthcare, unable to work, study and enjoy the 'COVID-free' New Zealand that our government uses to boost its public image.
What right does this government have to celebrate, or take credit for restoring us to safety, when not all of our people are safe and at home?
This situation is profoundly unjust and they need to be held accountable for their callousness. Please sign and share this petition to urge the government to take responsibility for bringing our people home.
