To Whom It May Concern:

As Rhode Island residents, we are concerned for our fellow Rhode Islander, Lilian Calderon. On January 15, 2018 while getting her marriage verified to begin the citizenship process, Ms. Calderon was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Johnston, Rhode Island. A mother of two US citizens (a 21 month old boy and a 4 year old girl) who came to the United States from Guatemala when she was 3 years old, Ms. Calderon is currently being held far from her family in the Suffolk Community Corrections Center in Boston.

We demand the release of Lilian Calderon so that she may rejoin her family in Rhode Island.  Ms. Calderon was detained while attempting to follow the rules of the immigration system by certifying her marriage to a US citizen. She does not deserve to be held in custody, far from her family, for attempting to validate her legal status. Apart from creating an erosion in trust within the immigration system, Ms. Calderon’s detention is having a visible impact on the lives of her children. Lilian’s husband Luis Gordillo has told us that their son has not stopped crying since his mother disappeared and that her daughter believes her mother has abandoned her. It is cruel and unacceptable to put young children and the entire family through this kind of pain which is why we demand that you release Ms. Calderon immediately.

We, as residents of Rhode Island and as communities and organizations stand in solidarity with Lilian and demand that she be reunited with her family as soon as possible.
