Tobacco is traditionally a remunerative crop with no economically viable alternative providing livelihood to 45.7 million people comprising farmers, farm labour, workers, retailers among others and their families. However, the current FCV Tobacco Market and the rapidly declining Legal Cigarette Industry in India is threatening the livelihood of Lakhs of Flue Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco farmers and their families.
Many tobacco farmers have committed suicide due to low prices and low demand of tobacco. With the recent farm crisis, their plight has heightened. The government has to halve tobacco production by 2020 in accordance with the FTC.
Agriculture is an important aspect of India and farmers are one of the lifelines of the country. With every farmer suicide, we prove how further away our policies are from local reality.
The need of the hour is that the government must provide immediate relief to these farmers by establishing technological and financial support to shift them to farming of alternative crops.
