Second Letter:  Immediate And Unconditional Release Of Conscience Prisoner Trần Huỳnh Duy Thức

I am writing this petition to request the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Amnesty International, the US president Barack Obama, heads of states of non-communist governments, Vietnamese people and others take action by requesting the Vietnamese Government to release Trần Huỳnh Duy Thức immediately and unconditionally.

As of today, the petition has been signed by 20,472 supporters from 75 different countries.  The five leading countries, which make up 91.6% petitioners are Vietnam (49.6%), United States of America (29.2%), Australia (8.3%), Canada (2.8%) and France (1.7%).  The remaining 8.4% of petitioners come from 70 countries across all continents.  My heart has been touched by the amazing kindness of global supporters.

Update: on his condition

On 24th May 2016, Trần Huỳnh Duy Thức started a ‘hunger strike until death' in his new Prison No 6 in Nghe An to protest at the lack of rule of law in Vietnam.  This date also marked his 7 years in prison.  However, after a request from his family and friends, he finally agreed to reduce the period of the hunger strike to only two weeks.

Nghe An Prison No 6, which is located in northern Vietnam, is far away (one day by road) from his family home in Ho Chi Minh city, has very high temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius in summer.  Thus, without electricity, life in a small concrete cell is unbearable!  He informed his family that ‘the authorities turned off the electricity in his cell on 8th August, as punishment for his refusal to carry out prison labour, which consists of making fake money for burning during funerals, as is customary in Viet Nam.’ This violates the international prohibition on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.

"Tran Huynh Duy Thuc is a blogger, entrepreneur and human rights defender and was arrested in May 2009. He advocates for economic, social and administrative reform, and respect for human rights. In January 2010 he was sentenced to 16 years' imprisonment under Article 79 of the Penal Code ("attempting to overthrow" the state), plus five years' house arrest on release. During his trial he claimed that he was tortured in detention to force him to confess." (Source: Ammesty International Australia, http://www.amnesty.org.au/iar/comments/37702/ )

Please keep signing this petition and sharing, thank you.

First Letter:  Save conscience prisoner Tran Huynh Duy Thuc from going on a 'Hunger Strike Until Death'

Vietnamese BBC stated on 17th May 2016 that family members confirmed that Tran Huynh Duy Thuc has made a decision to go on a 'hunger strike until death' in the Nghe An prison starting on 24th May 2016. This date will mark exactly 7 years since he was imprisoned in Vietnam.
