Illinois: We Need More Quality Public School Options
Every student in Illinois deserves a great school. But many Illinois schools are failing our kids.
We have an opportunity right now to provide Illinois parents with more quality public school options for their kids.
The Charter School Quality Act will improve the quality of charter schools and increase the number of high quality public charter school options for our kids by developing a state charter authorizing board. The bill has already passed the State Senate and is currently being considered by the House of Representatives.
Charter schools are public schools that are open to all kids in a district. They operate independently from districts so have more flexibility to use innovative techniques to serve kids, like longer school days. Often, high performing charter schools in low-income neighborhoods have hundreds of kids applying for a small number of spots. A public lottery is held to determine which students will attend, and the results can be devastating for families that saw a quality charter school as their best chance for a good education for their child.
Every student in Illinois deserves a great school regardless of their zip code. The Charter School Quality Act will expand the number of high quality charter school in Illinois by mandating best practices and by providing a new charter school approval process.
Take action today to tell your State Representative to support the Charter School Quality Act. It's time to put Illinois students first.
The Charter School Quality Act, recently passed by the Senate, will do just that. I ask you to help make sure this bill passes the House.
The Charter School Quality Act will establish a statewide authorizer, and require authorizers examine and establish best practices. Establishing a statewide authorizer improves the quality of charter schools, facilitates the establishment of new charter schools and ultimately improves the state’s public school education system as a whole.
I ask that you please support this bill and provide Illinois parents and students with more quality public school options.
