A 2015 study by the Correctional Association of New York found that 54 percent of women in prison said they do not get enough sanitary pads. Recently, the US Senate passed the First Step Act, a bill that requires all federal prisons to provide quality pads and tampons free to inmates. However, this bill does not require state prisons to do this. Currently, Illinois does not provide free menstrual products to incarcerated women, leaving them to have to buy menstrual products from prison commissaries or resort to other, dehumanizing methods to deal with natural life processes. This is not a problem that male prisoners have to face.

This problem can be solved by Illinois State Legislation and the Illinois Department of Corrections working together to provide incarcerated women with the free menstrual products that they desperately need.
