Illinois General Assembly: Ratify The Equal Rights Amendment
This petition had 298 supporters
Sex discrimination is not illegal under the United States Constitution. Until the legislatures of three more states ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), citizens are unprotected under national law and remain at the mercy of legislators who can impose, overturn and repeal laws on politically motivated whims. Illinois is one of the states obstructing the ERA's ratification.
The Equal Rights Amendment simply states: Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.
In 1972, the United States Congress passed the ERA by a large majority of Democrats and Republicans and the ERA was ratified by 35 out of the 50 states - but that is three states short of the 38 states required for ratification.
Discrimination on account of sex is unjust, unfair and un-American. Please join with the citizens of Illinois and ERA Advocates from across the country by signing this petition calling on the Illinois General Assembly to take immediate action to ratify the ERA.
