Sean Hayes started this petition to Illinois State Senate and

With the recent exorbitant increases in taxes and vehicles fees in the state of Illinois, all citizens living here will experience quite a decrease of take-home income in 2020 and future years! Even those on the lower end of the income level will be adversely effected by the raised registration fees (and title fees) as well as vehicle trade-in taxes. This petition is calling for greater flexibility on vehicle registration due to the further increasing costs.

For example:
Prior to Jan 1, 2020: When you purchase a used car from a dealer you would pay sales tax + $100 Title Fee + $101 Vehicle Registration fee.
After Jan 1, 2020: Car buyers will now pay a $150 Title Fee + $151 Registration Fees; $101 more! Extrapolate that out 10 years, and every car owner has paid $500 more for each vehicle they own. Own 3 cars? Make that $1,500 over 10 years.

Is $50 more per year a lot of money? No. But, what if you have 2 vehicles, and one that is broken down? Is it fair to pay for registration for vehicles that are broken or in disrepair?

The Solution:
Many other states provide the ability to temporarily cancel license plates for vehicles that will remain unused for an extended period of time.  If the state of Illinois made this possible, owners of multiple vehicles could apply for a temporary hold on their tags, allowing all car owners flexibility!
