The Chicago River is known as one of the dirtiest rivers in the United States. Sewage, chemicals, and litter fill the river with millions of tons of waste every year. Every time there is more than 3 inches of rain in a storm, the sewers overflow and put millions of gallons of water filled with feces, chemicals, and germs directly into the river, bypassing the water treatment facilities. Companies around Chicago have very few regulations on where they can dump waste, which often leads to dangerous chemicals seeping into the river through groundwater. In rivers around the Chicago River, like the Calumet River, companies dump chemicals directly into the rivers.

Our petition is for three goals. The first is to have the city of Chicago repair or replace the sewer system, which leaks into the river and has a flawed filtration system that allows chemicals to enter the river even when it filters out human waste.

The second is for the Illinois government to increase regulations on corporations that have dangerous waste and punish those that put waste into the river. Even when they don't dump it directly, companies often leave waste near the river where it can sink into the ground and contaminate it.

The final goal of this petition is to gain support for Friends of the Chicago River, an organization that organize river cleanings around the city and shares information about how people can help the river. This helps get rid of litter that people leave around the river, which is a better known cause of pollution that can be solved by individuals. Any money this petition gets will go to them.

Thank you for supporting the river!
