Ending the Police Brutality Cycle: Fight for Paul O'Neal

Yahaira Tarr started this petition to Illinois State House and

Throughout history Black and Brown lives have suffered from systemic oppression due to institutionalized racism and still do today. The system can't investigate the system.  We demand equity. :
Initially this petition was to get video footage released of the shooting and death of Chicago teen Paul O' Neal by an officer.   The case of Paull O'Neal is one of many injustices we face today. Paull O'Neal was an unarmed 18 year old boy who was shot and killed by Chicago police while running from them. After stealing a car, and a car chase the police cornered him in South Shore, as he was heading back to his own neighborhood. They shot 12 shots at him, some of which were into the car he was driving, which is illegal. Paull proceeded to get out of the car, and he started to run away from the police's gunfire. The police proceeded to shoot him in the back, and he died. Paull deserved due process in court and a trial for his actions, not death. Shooting him in the back while he was unarmed was not self defense, but murder. Like many, Paull was a child that made a mistake. Unlike many, he paid for his actions with his life.

Since we've started the petition, the video has been released. We aren't positive that is because of our petition, but we are confident it made some kind of impact. Now, we are requesting an outside investigation be done after being informed that this case will be investigated by CPD. It is unfair and unjust to let someone investigate themselves when a crime has been committed, so the same standard should be held when an act of social and racial injustice is carried out by law enforcement. CPD is also trying to hide the names of the officers involved in the murder to protect them. They need to take ownership and responsibility for their actions. It is important we know their names. The same way media demonizes the names of Black people in media when they commit crimes, the men who murdered Paul must be held accountable. It is just and fair. There shouldn't be any special privileges.

Shedding light on a situation that hits home creates hope for a change and a better tomorrow. We (Yahaira Tarr and Eva Lewis, two black teenage girls from Chicago) are demanding freedom from this cycle. In order to obtain this we need unity, a large voice, and power in numbers. Our voice will only be heard if everyone on the spectrum from black to white decides to come together and make a change.
