Victoria Sandora started this petition to Illinois State House

House Bill 0004 (Medicaid covering Doula care) is in committee currently and needs more support from Illinois Representatives. The purpose of this petition is to inform the public and the representatives about the benefits of adding Doula care during pregnancy as a Medicaid benefit.

According to DONA.org, A Doula is “a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.” This service is beneficial to any mother whether this is their first child or not. Doulas provide individualized care to pregnant women.

When an woman is going through her first pregnancy, there are many changes happening all over her body and it can become very overwhelming and frightening. With a Doula guiding these individuals, the journey through pregnancy can seem much more manageable. While traditionally hiring a Doula is a privilege for those able to afford it, if this bill passes, Doula care can be accessible to even those who cannot afford this usually expensive service.

To sum it up, HB0004 would provide a wonderfully thorough pregnancy service to a marginalized population of impoverished women, who already are struggling to live day to day in this society.
