There is a need now more than ever to make the shift to renewable energy for the entirety of the United States. Climate change is a pressing matter that isn't going away. Shifting to renewable energy would benefit our current global warming crisis.

Over the past few years renewable energy has been dropping in cost. Therefor rapidly falling costs for wind turbines, solar panels, and batteries, could get the United states to 90% zero-carbon power along with hydropower and nuclear power with no extra cost to consumers. (2008 to 2019, cost of wind power fell 70%, large-scale solar fell 90%, 2010 to 2019 cost of batteries dropped 90%). This project would reduce economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 27% by 2035.

By building wind, solar, and battery storage, we can take coal-fired plants offline, as well as a number of gas fired plants. Using the remaining facilities to supply electricity when needed. (Fossil fuels account for 10%, nuclear and hydropower 20%, wind and solar paired with battery storage 70%, meaning 90% of electricity would come from zero- carbon sources.) Not to mention by 2035 ratepayers will have paid off most gas-fired or coal-fired power plants running today, so consumers won’t lose money if utilities shut down plants early. Ratepayers will be funding new carbon-free power plants after they pay off the old ones, making it cheaper to shift away from fossil fuels.

Another thing to add is that this is a labor intensive job. By moving to 90% zero-carbon power. The US could generate upwards to half a million jobs a year, which could help overcome the current economic slump.
