Wildcard IHSA Scholastic Bowl Teams
0 have signed. Let’s get to 100!
For years, quality high school Scholastic Bowl teams in Illinois have been denied the opportunity to play in the IHSA state tournament simply because the competition in their sectional is much more difficult than elsewhere. As an example, 2 of the top 4 teams in Illinois* (Barrington and Stevenson) are in the same sectional, as well as 3 more top Illinois teams (Loyola, Carmel, and Fremd). Furthermore, the other 2 of the aforementioned top 4 teams are also in the same sectional (Naperville North and IMSA), in addition to 2 more top teams (Metea Valley and Waubonsie Valley). Given that these sectionals are only represented by 1/4 of the teams in the state tournament, it is clear that something needs to be fixed. In order to increase opportunity for all Scholastic Bowl teams, we propose that the top 4 teams from around Illinois that did not qualify for state by winning their sectional should get to go as "wildcard teams". This will be determined by comparing PPB (points per bonus) around the various sectionals under IHSA. The new wildcard teams will be entered into the existing (somewhat larger) pools and the same number of teams per pool will be advanced, so as not to disturb the current tournament format. We believe that this will allow for a more representative and fair state championship that includes more teams to display their talent.
