Mike Bare started this petition to Illinois High School Association (IHSA)

Per IHSA by-law 3.121, Illinois high school soccer players are not allowed to play in all-star contests until after they have completed their senior season. This by-law has been in existence since the early 80's and was changed from all sports to just 4 sports (basketball, football, soccer, volleyball) during the 1986-87 school year. The IHSA is unable to provide the history as to why the by-law was modified at that time to only reference these 4 sports.

Fast forward to today and Allstate in conjunction with ESPN and Major League Soccer (MLS) have launched their inaugural Allstate Cup, which will consist of two matches featuring the top 40 junior boys and the top 40 junior girls from across the nation with the games being nationally televised on ESPNU. The games will take place on July 31st during MLS All-Star week in Orlando, Florida. This date is outside of the IHSA fall season and would not conflict with any mandatory high school activities.

There are multiple reasons to allow our Illinois soccer players to participate (national exposure to colleges, over 75% of other states allow participation, a potential once in a lifetime experience to play with the top players from across the country, the opportunity to represent their school and community on the national level), but it is hard to come up with a single reason they shouldn't be allowed to play, especially when other sports such as baseball, track & field, and swimming & diving don't have these limitations.

In a time when elite high school soccer players are being forced to choose between high school and academy soccer, which advertises national exposure to colleges, we should not be limiting our student-athletes from events that promote high school soccer and gives them that same exposure.

If one of your players is fortunate to be selected as one of the top 40 boys or girls in the nation, would you want them to have the chance to play?

Please sign this petition if you are in support of Illinois high school soccer players being able to participate in all-star events such as the Allstate Cup.

This petition will help show the IHSA that Illinois high school soccer coaches are in favor of events that promote and showcase high school soccer in our state and throughout the country.
