RAHMAN RUFAI started this petition to Illinois Governor and

In the 70's there were only 50,000 Muslims in Illinois; today, there are over 400,000 Muslims and growing. Most Muslims do not feel welcome in Illinois due to the fact that Eid is not considered a holiday. Due to the fact that many are unaware of this special day, Muslims are unable to celebrate Eid because of duties like work and school. This holiday is celebrated in many countries outside of the United States. It is very essential to Muslims for various reasons, a few include blessings from God and a celebration of accomplishment from fasting consecutively for 29-30 days.

The word "Eid" means festival, it is a day where Muslims all around the world come together to celebrate the month of Ramadan. The celebration of Eid consists of a morning prayer followed by a fiest, engaging with family and friends and more prayers. Muslim students are forced to lose a day of education in order to celebrate this sacred and holy tradition.

We celebrate every holiday recognized by schools and workplace. However, we will feel more welcome if we were given the day of Eid as a recognized and excused absence. This enables our children the chance to celebrate with their parents, neighbors and fellow Muslims. We are tax paying citizens who contribute to the community in many ways. We are business owners, doctors, nurses, accountants, teachers, leaders, and so much more.
