A. Dunn started this petition to Congress and

We are trying to prevent Asian Carp from infesting Lake Michigan.

Where did Asian Carp come from?

  • Originated from Southeast Asia
  • Imported to “cleanse Southern sewage lagoons and fish farms” (The Detroit News)
  • Escaped captivity
  • Swam into Mississippi River
  • Soon to be in Lake Michigan

Why are Asian Carp bad?

  • Outcompete native fish for resources
  • Carp kill more sensitive organisms which lower the water quality
  • Carp jump which can be a risk to others
  • Negatively affect the fishing industry

There is already a plan in action to create a barrier in Joliet, Illinois (The Brandon Road Lock, and Dam project). Although this has been approved, it costs $778 million dollars to complete the project.

It is important that this project is funded so that our water is safer to drink and a safe environment for native lake animals.

35% of funds could come from non-federal funds and would cost about $272 million. This can be from outside sources and state funding. This all depends on the amount of money Congress approves to give to the project.

"Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker...authorized his state's cooperation with initial phases of the program but said he wouldn't commit to long-term support without efforts to limit costs and contributions from other states" (“Army Corps of Engineers Approves $778M Plan to Block Asian Carp”). Other states affected by this issue might be further convinced to participate in the program, and thus there will be more funding that will benefit the solution to the problem.

By signing this petition, you will help quicken this process of creating the barrier. With more awareness, we will be able to possibly create a funding program.
