Stressed Rph started this petition to Illinois Governor and

POOR WORKING CONDITIONS FOR PHARMACY TECHNICIANS AND PHARMACIST IN RETAIL CHAINS

Per Illinois law, pharmacists are now required to counsel on all new prescriptions as well as any changes to prescriptions. Counseling is effective and can help a patient properly utilize their medication. The problem is not the required counseling, it is the manner it is delegated.

Pharmacy chains continue to cut technician hours therefore forcing the pharmacist under more stress to work quickly to fill and verify prescriptions. Technicians are under stress because they are unable to sell prescriptions without the pharmacist scanning a bar code to clear the required counseling. The lines continue to grow and patients become upset as they have to wait for the pharmacist to come. The pharmacist may be on the phone with a patient, a doctor's office or even double checking a dose for a patient's medication. The pharmacist has to drop their current task and clear the consultation after counseling the patient then return to their tasks. Pharmacies with drive thru locations are even more stressful. The pharmacist is now juggling between tasks such as phone calls, verifying prescriptions, checking drug interactions, answering questions in the consultation window, counseling in the out window and then running to the drive thru to clear consultation requirements. Safe dispensing is being jeopardized as retail pharmacies are understaffing. Legislators must consider adding an additional pharmacist for the counseling requirement.

The pharmacy staff can not work under such situations that can jeopardize a patient's safety.

Pharmacists quickly eat their lunches sometimes in the back of the pharmacy or take quick lunches even though they are working long shifts and are required by law to take a 30 minute lunch. Most state laws do not allow for food in the pharmacy but staffing in retail pharmacies do not allow for pharmacists to take a lunch break.

As a pharmacist, I am demanding better work conditions for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. A full 30 minute lunch period; proper staffing with a minimum of two pharmacists on duty to satisfy the counseling requirement and an end to company productivity quotas.

The technicians are the back bone of the retail pharmacy. I have seen technicians come to work when they are short staffed by one tech sometimes even two. They have to complete the work of the others and are put under more stress. Some pharmacies do not have the hours to allow for more technicians to be on duty. The chain pharmacies cut budget hours to fill their pockets.

Please sign this petition to help better retail pharmacy working conditions and stop letting these big chains get away with this.
