Childhood obesity has recently skyrocketed, and there are more children diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes than ever before. The epidemic has resulted from the consumption of large amount of empty calories, calories containing no nutritional value. They are often found among processed foods that are prevalent within school lunches. School lunches include greasy, unhealthy foods that are high in fat, as supposed to fruits and vegetables. Many children are forced to eat school lunches due to financial constraints within a family. Let’s give children the healthy, nutritional lunch that they deserve each day by finding more room in the school budget to do so. In addition, to burn off calories from other processed foods, the amount of weekly gym classes must be increased to five days per week. It was recently lowered to three days per week in the state of Illinois. More frequent gym classes can increase academic performance and muscle strength, which increases energy that the body burns. If children are introduced to healthy patterns now, at a young age, the likelihood that they will remain healthy as adults increases. After all, 4 out of 5 obese children remain obese as adults. It’s up to US to change this.
