Add a non-voting faculty trustee to the University of Illinois Board

In advocation of shared governance, we have a proposal for the creation of a faculty trustee position at the University of Illinois. There is currently no effective way for faculty interests to be represented on the Board of Trustees. Hence, we hope to thin the communication gap between the Board of Trustees and the faculty of the respective campuses of the University of Illinois in hopes of better coordinating their goals. We believe that this can best be achieved through a designated faculty trustee position. Our proposal is similar to what students currently have in that it calls for three faculty-elected positions (one at UIUC, UIC, and UIS), however they would be non-voting and exclude closed sessions due to conflicts of interest. This can only be done through the Illinois General Assembly, and that is why we need the help of state senators and representatives to make this happen. We will be going to Springfield with your support. Please sign, and if you would like concrete information on current faculty trustees at other universities, here is a link to a scholarly article on the matter http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/cheri/upload/cheri_wp149.pdf
