The intersection at Old State and Lerna Road has been notorious for accidents, many involving death, with little change done at the intersection to prevent these accidents. In 2017 there was a terrible accident that took the life a young local girl, she was 16. With her were 2 children she was babysitting, neither of them died, but we're both hurt. After this nothing was done to the area to upgrade the safety. Most recently, an 89 year old man from Charleston was involved in another collision at this intersection, causing his death and severe injury to an 18 year old. Both these deaths were from failure to stop. If we added rumble strips, it would alert more people to the upcoming stop sign, also encouraging them to check to see if there is cross traffic on Lerna Road.
Imagine your child has just gotten their drivers license and is a brand new driver, and is coming up on Old State Road and forgets to check if there is a stop sign. Because of the failure to see the stop sign, another car comes speeding down Lerna Road and crashes into your child's car and possibly severely injuring them. Adding rumble strips is a cheap and effective way to remind people to stop, and can prevent parents from grieving about their child or preventing children from mourning their parents.
