Near Seatonville, Illinois there is a creek by the name of “Negro Creek”. While some claim that the name should stand because it signifies some of the early African Americans who settled in the area, we believe that racial slurs are not the best way to commemorate this. It was even stated in an article by the Carmi Times (linked below) that some locals refer to the creek “not by the name on the map, but with the word that made Mark Twain’s “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” one of the most frequently challenged books in the United States”.

The best way to avoid any and all racial slurs potentially involved with the name of this creek is to change it. We suggest changing the name to “Seatonville Creek” after a town near the creek and then finding another way to acknowledge the African American men and women who first came to Bureau County. Perhaps a plaque or a statue with the names of those men and women would be more apt than a racist label.
