Six Month Disassociation Ban for College Ceili Club Dancers

For many Irish dancers, attending college means hanging up our shoes and trying to let go of a passion that we’ve spent years and countless hours of sweat and effort perfecting.
However, many of these college dancers are fortunate enough to attend a school that has a College Ceili Club on campus. These student organizations are growing rapidly every year, becoming popular among dancers, and supported by fans and others on campus. In response, IDTAMA has recently created a College Ceili competition for the Mid America Oireachtas, with 2016 being its inaugural year. This competition mirrors that of the All Ireland Championships’ College Ceili competition.
Unfortunately, many dancers are excluded from participating in these incredible competitions due to a current ban. This rule states that dancers who have competed in solo competitions in the past two years are banned from participating in College Ceili competitions.
UW-Madison’s Sláinte Irish Dancers, along with other College Ceili Clubs, would like to challenge this rule. We seek an amendment which would be in line with the current Transfer Ban imposed by CLRG. This amendment would mean that dancers must have a period of six months between their last solo feis entry, and the date of the intended College Ceili Conpetition (i.e., the Mid America Oireachtas) in order to be eligible to compete with their respective College Ceili team.
Under the current two year ban, many dancers would be ineligible until their junior year of school. Such an exclusionary rule limits participation of many dancers and College Ceili Clubs, and, ultimately, is not in line with the existing six month Transfer Ban that competitive dancers and schools must follow.
Whether you are a current or former dancer, part of a College Ceili Club, or a TCRG, we urge you to sign and help us amend the two year ban that prevents so many Irish dancers from participating in the incredible opportunity that is the Mid America Oireachtas College Ceili Competion.
