Why this petition matters

Started by Hala Nazzal

Most schools are not identifying Eid-Al-Fitr, a religious celebration that is observed by Muslims around the world, as a holiday where students are given the day off.  Eid al-Fitr is after Ramadan, and it is determined by the lunar cycle. This holiday is to celebrate Muslims who fasted through this sacred month. Throughout this holy day, Muslims are seen praying, giving to the less fortunate, wearing their best clothes, and enjoying time with family and friends. Since this day is not considered a holiday in many schools, the majority of Muslims end up skipping school, missing assignments, and possibly even tests because there is not a scheduled holiday. By taking just one unscheduled day off, the workload for the next couple of days doubles for Muslim students, giving rise to a great amount of stress on a holy holiday. Through this petition, we hope that the MICDS community can start to identify Eid-Al-Fitr’s significance to Muslims and recognize it as a holiday.
