Pneumothorax Decompression for Advanced or Intermediate EMS

For rural EMS providers, the state of Idaho EMS board will not allow advanced or intermediate providers to reverse a collapsed lung in patients. This condition, can arise from either injury, or spontaneously. Numerous medical providers have been more than willing to provide training to bring our skill level and are baffled as to why this procedure and training are held from these providers where we have so many other tools at our disposal. This is the one simple procedure the can change the outcome in life or death of a patient, unless quickly treated, the outcome is fatal. If either statewide, or just for rural association providers, we as EMS providers, and their medical directors would like to have a full and comprehensive review by the Idaho state EMS board to reconsider their stance on this life saving procedure.
