According to LA RS 17:416:18, Teacher Bill of Rights Section 5, teachers have the right to teach in a safe, secure, and orderly environment that is conducive to learning and free from recognized dangers and hazards that are causing or likely to cause serious injury. Iberville Parish has plans to reopen schools fulltime for Elementary students and teachers and Mixed (hybrid) instruction for Middle and High school. This means that hundreds of children and adults will be in environments daily that are not the most ideal given the global pandemic associated with COVID-19. Louisiana is currently number one in the nation regarding Coronavirus infection cases per capita for the second time since March, which means that signs of improvement are not present at this time in our state and parish. Iberville Parish is also a red parish for COVID cases as well. In order to best keep the numbers of infections low inside schools and communities, the start of school should be either pushed back until after Labor Day or fully virtual for ALL students, allowing only teachers access to campuses to instruct their children and most of all, reduce the number of personal, face to face interactions daily to best slow the spread of the virus.
