Ian Somerhalder: Step Up to Say NO to Violence Against Women as a Celebrity Male Role Model

With at least 1 in 3 women beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime, Violence Against Women (VAW) affects all of us because we all have mothers, sisters, daughters, and female friends in our lives. Yet the public persists in seeing VAW as a women’s issue even though it is vital that men and boys step up to help stop VAW in their families and communities.

This is why The Pixel Project created the Celebrity Male Role Model Pixel Reveal campaign which highlights 4 world-famous men from different walks of life with no personal history of violence and who are positive socially-responsible role models to inspire men and boys work with their communities for the right of women and girls to live their lives free of VAW. Currently, our distinguished line-up includes a Nobel Laureate, a Pulitzer Prize Winner and a famous Environmentalist.

The mystery Male Role Models will be featured in a million-pixel virtual portrait collage that will be unveiled pixel by pixel as donors worldwide purchase pixels for US$1 each. As each Male Role Model is revealed, an exclusive public service announcement from him speaking up against VAW will be launched online.

We are asking you to sign our petition to help us recruit Ian Somerhalder – star of ‘The Vampire Diaries’, well-respected Environmentalist, Animal Rights campaigner and youth leader – as our fourth and final Celebrity Male Role Model.

All we ask for is 90 minutes of his time for our international award-winning photographer, Jillian Edelstein, to take his portrait and record his public service announcement by February 2013 in time for us to launch the campaign on the 101st International Women’s Day on March 8, 2013.

The US$1 million expected to be raised from the campaign will be shared equally between the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and The Pixel Project. We will be awarding six $25,000 grants from our share of the Pixel Reveal proceeds to six selected anti-VAW nonprofits from around the world.

If Ian joins this campaign, The Pixel Project will honour his commitment to animal welfare and stopping VAW by awarding one of the $25,000 grants to an anti-Violence Against Women charity of his choice that helps battered women and their pets. This is in recognition of the fact that many women are unwilling to leave their abusers because they cannot take their pets with them – pets who also suffer violence from the abuser.

Tell Ian Somerhalder to get on board the Pixel Reveal campaign and help us inspire men and boys to join in the fight to end VAW while raising funds for anti-VAW nonprofits worldwide!

It’s time to stop violence against women. Together.

Letter to
Ian Somerhalder
Dear Ian:

PETITION LETTER

With at least 1 in 3 women beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime, I am writing to you today in solidarity with The Pixel Project (www.thepixelproject.net) to invite you to join all of us in saying NO to Violence Against Women by getting on board their Celebrity Male Role Model Pixel Reveal campaign.

The campaign features 4 famous men from different walks of life with no personal history of violence and who are socially responsible role models to inspire men and boys work with their communities for the right of women and girls to live their lives free of violence. You will be joining a distinguished line-up which includes a Nobel Laureate, a Pulitzer Prize Winner and a famous Environmentalist.

Participating Role Models will be featured in a million-pixel mystery portrait collage which will be unveiled as people worldwide donate to the campaign by purchasing pixels for US$1 each. As each dollar is donated, a pixel is activated and more of the portrait collage will be revealed. As each Male Role Model is fully revealed, an exclusive public service announcement from him speaking up against Violence Against Women will be launched online.

The campaign is expected to raise US$1 million to be shared equally between the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and The Pixel Project. The Pixel Project will also be awarding six $25,000 grants from their share of the Pixel proceeds to selected anti-Violence Against Women nonprofits.

I also join The Pixel Project in commending your dedication to the environment and animal rights through the Ian Somerhalder Foundation. Did you know that many women are unwilling to leave their abusive partners because they cannot take their beloved pets with them – pets who also suffer violence at the hands of the abuser? Check out the link between animal abuse and domestic violence here: http://bit.ly/TkGwUw

Should you join the Pixel Reveal campaign, The Pixel Project will honour your joint commitment to animal welfare and women’s rights by awarding one of the $25,000 grants to an anti-Violence Against Women charity of your choice that aids battered women and their pets.

All The Pixel Project needs is 90 minutes of your time for their international award-winning photographer, Jillian Edelstein (www.jillianedelstein.co.uk), to take your portrait and record a brief and simple Public Service Announcement from you. They hope to have your portrait completed by March 2013 as they are hoping to launch the Pixel Reveal campaign on 8 March 2012 - the 101st International Women's Day. They will send Jillian to wherever you are to take your portrait at your convenience.

It would be wonderful if you could accept their invitation to help stop the violence suffered by so many women and girls worldwide.

Thank you for your kind attention!
