At the end of this year, UNSW Estate Management is planning to demolish and disestablish UNSW Hall - a diverse and inclusive college community. UNSW Hall provides one of the very few housing options for a significant number of low socio-economic, regional, international and exchange students. Shutting down UNSW Hall will result in the displacement of 220 students, many of whom will be unable to afford alternative accommodation options at or nearby the university. This will damage not only students' accommodation, but will also ultimately affect their positions as students at UNSW.
Signing this petition will help shed light on the necessity of UNSW Hall's continuation as a college community to UNSW Estate Management and Vice Chancellor, Ian Jacobs. Demolishing one of the few affordable accommodation options on campus will have dire consequences on the livelihoods of a large number of students, and this is clearly unacceptable. In signing this petition, you are supporting not just an accommodation option, but a vibrant community space for current and future students of UNSW.
We are requesting that UNSW defer the demolition of UNSW Hall, and enter into a one year consultancy period - a period where we are able to negotiate with the university to reach a viable solution for our residents which upholds all that our accommodation option stands for and preserves our community's identity.
