Hi everyone! I am Matthew Moore and I am a freshman at Clark High School in the Plano Independent School District. In PISD, the dress code is very strict. You can’t wear holes in your jeans that are on your knees or above. Your shirt has to cover your bottom. You can’t wear pajama bottoms. You can’t wear shirts that show your stomach (even the slightest bit), and you can’t wear shorts that are “short”. This doesn't seem as strict as it actually is. I see at least 5 people getting dress coded a day (and those are the ones that I actually see). I'm sure there are more people getting dress coded. People should have the right to wear what they want when they want (of course within the law). Please read the rest of the description of the petition to learn more.

The dress-code that is implemented has made students not express themself the way they want to at our school. Whether they are wearing a shirt that shows the slightest bit of their stomach or rips in their jeans that shows "too much skin". This dress code shows that when a female or really any sex, that when you show "too much skin", you should be sexualized. This teaches children at a young age that if they show their shoulders or knees that it is too scandalous or skimpy for children/teens to wear. This implants the thought in young boys' minds that it's okay to sexualize girls when it's not okay. When you are walking on the sidewalk in a tank top and jeans, do you want someone to try to pull a move on you or even touch you in any way, shape, or form? Probably not. The sexual assaulter in this situation, grew up learning that it was okay to sexualize women's bodies if they are showing skin. We need to teach this generation, and many more, that it's okay to show off your body and be proud of it. I'm not saying that anyone should come to school naked or in undergarments, but that they should wear what they feel comfortable in.

Last month in the hallway, I was walking with my friend and out of nowhere, she got dress coded. She got dress coded for her shirt even though it was covering her stomach. Last month as well, my friend got dress coded as soon as she stepped out of her car. She was wearing a turtle neck, sweater, and jeans(not ripped). She was infuriated by this. She told the dress coder to go talk to her mother because she had been dress coded 7 other times this school year. I have also seen 6 girls in the Cougarettes walking behind the dress coder when I didn't see anything inappropriate or wrong with their outfits. 2 months ago, I saw a male wearing insanely short shorts. I could see at least half of his neon pink underwear. This is disgusting. The fact that females are getting dress coded when their outfits aren't inappropriate but when a male clearly breaks the dress code, it's okay. We need to change this.

In a study from January of 2020 from www.psypost.org women said that they dress less provocatively for men on first dates because they know the behavior they can have. Such as inappropriate touching and behavior. This needs to stop. Women these days want to dress for themselves and not for men but are forced to alter their clothing choices because they feel as if they should trade their comfort for safety.

I want to completely destroy the dress code we have had since the Plano Independent School District first began (1891). Here are the rules I want to implement. There are only five.

- All students have to wear undergarments to school, such as underwear, a bra, etc. You obviously can't go to school naked.

- You wear clothes over your undergarments. In this rule, you can't have any sort of undergarment showing. That means you can't just wear a bra and jeans or sag your pants so it shows your boxers.

- You must wear some form of a shirt. Whether it is a T-shirt, tank top, crop top, or any other kind of clothing piece that covers your chest.

- You must wear some form of pants. Whether it is jeans, shorts, skirts, leggings, or any other kind of clothing piece that covers your lower private parts. You must not wear "booty shorts". What I mean by that, you can't wear shorts that actually show your butt.

- You must wear some form of shoes. Whether they are tennis shoes, flip flops, slippers, slides, heels, dress shoes, or any other kind of clothing piece that covers your feet. 

- No matter the student's race, gender, or sexuality, the student must not be discriminated against for their clothing. By this, I mean that females cannot be dress coded simply because they are females, Asians cannot be dress coded because they are Asian, a male cannot be dress coded simply because they are wearing "feminine" clothing, etc...

We need to teach our young students that you should wear what you want and not dress for other people such as other students, strangers and even the vice principal of your school. Please sign this petition to change the PISD dress-code policy. Times are changing, and so should our dress-code.
