Success! 11k signatures reached and MPs take note
Jul 30, 2014 — Amazing news! We’ve broken through 11,000 signatures for our petition calling on the Government not to cut people’s benefits while they reconsider a decision that they are fit for work. Thank you so much for helping us achieve this incredible milestone.
Importantly, the politicians in Westminster have begun to take action; you’ve spoken and an influential group of MPs have listened. The Work and Pensions Select Committee has called on the Government to review the policy of cutting people’s benefits during this period – known as mandatory reconsideration – saying that the current system is ‘illogical’.
Our new research (you can download it here: www.citizensadvice.org.uk/the_cost_of_a_second_opinion_campaign_summary.pdf) shows how the new rules on mandatory reconsideration have led to increased stress and delays for claimants, leaving some with no money while they wait for the DWP to make a decision. Every month, 1,600 people come to us for help with this problems like this.
So now we need to seize another opportunity to get the message across that the policy isn’t working. The Government is running an independent review of the system for checking if people are fit for work. If you have claimed Employment and Support Allowance (or know someone who has) you can let them know about your experience. It’s as simple as filling in an online questionnaire or dropping them an email. Find out how here: www.citizensadvice.org.uk/fitforwork
If you’ve never claimed ESA or don’t know anyone who has, you can still help by posting the petition (www.change.org/fitforwork) on Facebook and encouraging your friends to sign it.
Thanks again for all your help!
