The GSC supports the current COGG model which in its first phase will build a 50m outdoor facility which isFULLY DESIGNED AND FUNDED to service the ever growing community in the Bellarine Peninsula…….NOW!

The COGG proposal also includes a stage 2 for an indoor facility. Preliminary designs can be viewed on the COGG website.

An outdoor facility should be built first and will benefit local swimmers and the wider community for the following reasons;

  • Currently swimmers residing on the Bellarine Peninsula have already voted with their feet and have chosen to drive past 2-3 COGG owned indoor facilities to access the outdoor pool(s) at the Kardinia Aquatic Centre.
  • Indoor pools are usually operated at a temperature of 30 degrees to cater for learn to swim, hydrotherapy and aquatic exercise classes. However, lap swimmers require pool temperature to be 28 degrees in order to comfortably exercise at a moderate-vigorous intensity, which only outdoor facilities deliver.
  • Contrary to some beliefs, year-round access to outdoor aquatic facilities is sought by local swimmers, this being demonstrated by strong demand at the Kardinia Aquatic Centre in the winter months.
  • Demand for outdoor pool space is already high, a third facility will help alleviate stress on the two current outdoor facilities, particularly as interest in outdoor swimming continues to grow post-pandemic. There is good reason for the 50 odd outdoor pools situated in Melbourne.
  • Outdoor facilities accommodate larger groups including squad training and competition, school sporting carnivals, water polo and surf lifesaving activities.They provide for spectators to watch these activities in comfort without the hot and humid conditions of an indoor pool.

We encourage members of the community to sign our petition to ensure the already fully designed and funded outdoor facility (phase 1) is built in Drysdale as originally intended and not hijacked in the eleventh hour by interests who advocate for an indoor pool to be built first with no thought to an outdoor facility
