I Stand With NM Teachers! Say NO to proposed pay cuts!

The Martinez Administration has released their proposed FY18 budget and the plan is alarming. At the top of the chopping block are teachers and state employees, who would receive a 3.5% reduction in pay. According to AFSCME, this amounts anywhere between a $700-$2,000 annual pay cut (per worker) for hard working New Mexicans and their families. Every year, we lose some of our state's best teachers due to the continued challenges faced within their profession. Enrollment in teacher training programs has declined, while teacher vacancies have increased. We understand our state's financial troubles, but why not start by closing corporate tax-cut loop holes? Why must we continue to balance our state's budget on the backs of hard working New Mexicans?

  • New Mexico ranks 47th in average teacher salary
  • New Mexico Starting Teacher Salary: $31,960
  • National Average Starting Teacher Salary: $45,453
  • New Mexico education performance ranked last in nation

It is up to all of us to hold our elected officials accountable to protecting what matters most to the future of New Mexico. Education is definitely part of that equation. The war on education and teachers must stop! Please sign our petition and send a message to State Legislators asking them to stand with educators and New Mexican families by NOT supporting these proposed cuts.

This is for all the teachers who taught us how to read and write, how to add/subtract, who filled our minds with knowledge, pushed us beyond our limits, believed in our ability to be/do better, and who gave us the one gift that can never be taken away-- an EDUCATION! Those of us who sign this petition stand behind you and we THANK YOU for your service. <3
