Why this petition matters

Started by Claire Smith

With the sad passing of the legendary Judith Durham wouldn’t it be great to honour her, and her massive contribution to music, by adopting ‘I am Australian’ as our National Anthem.

Let’s face it, our current anthem is dreadful.
It’s colonial, even though it’s fairly modern, it implies AUSTRALIA is a young country - ‘for we are young and free’, of course totally forgetting that people have lived here for more than 40,000 years before white settlement.

We need an anthem.
Not a terrible durge that no one knows all the words to.

We need an anthem that makes us feel united! Not one that segregates and forgets.

We need an anthem. Not something that sounds like a High School song from the 1960s.

We need an anthem we can all be proud of. And Judith Durham wrote it.

I am Australian.

We call on the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, to seek to change our current anthem to the rousing, uniting, memorable and perfect song I AM AUSTRALIAN (We are one). To honour Judith Durham and to give Australians an anthem to be proud of.
