On October 8th, 2021, Hyderabad faced a heavy rainfall of 100mm in just a couple of hours: What's the reason for this sudden devastating flood? Climate Change.

According to Malesh Palawat, chief meteorologist of SkyMet; Hyderabad faces many “microbursts observed over the past 4-5 years”: Hyderabad will continue to face these disastrous microbursts of natural disasters if climate change isn't taken action against.

Where's all this global warming originating from? Surprisingly, Hyderabad ranks 6th for the top most recognised cities in India in producing CO2 equivalent emissions in the domestic sector. More concerning, Hyderabad has the supposed highest ratio of Transportation emissions to general emissions. With a whopping 57% of transportation emissions taking over the carbon footprint of Hyderabad, it tops more infamous polluted cities like Delhi and Mumbai.

Transportation produces mainly Carbon Dioxide, Nitrous Oxide, and occasionally Methane due to the use of fossil fuels. With Hyderabad's GDP growth of 5.5%, the city likely needs a solution against climate change that is easy to conduct, effective and can produce sustainable change and positive consequences.

This is where this petition comes in. By signing this petition, you get to contribute to raising awareness on the effectiveness of Electric Cars and Carbon Tax against climate action in Hyderabad. Carbon tax is essentially a fee that can be issued based on the usage of an individual's carbon footprint: if they have a bigger carbon usage, more taxing. This encourages individuals to seek more environmentally friendly transport such as electric cars. If a Carbon Tax law is implemented in Hyderabad, it could potentially change millions of innocents suffering due to climate change. Along with this, increasing shares and economic incentives of Electric Cars encourages several companies to shift towards the more alternative and eco-friendly option that is electric cars: using batteries and the power of electricity against measly fossil fuels.

Telangana already scores a below par score of 43/100 on efforts against climate change in Indian states. The government has a lot to catch up in order to battle climate change and bring a more sustainable future for their citizens overall. By signing this petition, you could possibly bring a step forward for the city against climate change through carbon taxes and electric cars.
