Charlotte Goodwin started this petition to HWRHS Administration

The Hamilton-Wenham Social Justice Club is advocating for a policy of Land Acknowledgement in our school district. Land acknowledgements are ways to remember the history of the land we’re on, and the native people that inhabit it.

The United States has a history of colonization and genocide of native people, and our local area isn’t exempt. The stories of Indigenous people on this land have been silenced through generations. Our goal with this Land Acknowledgement is to acknowledge this truth, to spread awareness and knowledge, as well as pay respect to our local Massachusett tribe in our advocacy for Indigenous people.

The Hamilton Wenham School Committee has just adopted the Land Acknowledgment, so with this precedent, it is time for the High School to take action. Our requests for the High School administration are as follows:

Using club fundraisers, we will place a physical marker (plaque or stone) on the school campus to commemorate the Indigenous land we are on.
We also request that our land acknowledgement statement be put on our public school websites, and that the statement be read before select community events such as whole school assemblies, graduations and other school related ceremonies.

The proposed statement is this:

"We would like to begin by acknowledging the Massachusett Tribe. The tribe of indigenous peoples from whom the Colony, Province, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts have taken their name. We would like to pay our respect to the ancestral bloodline of the Massachusett Tribe and their descendants who still inhabit historical Massachusett Tribe territories to this day."

We want to show the administration the community's support so if you back these policies, then please sign on and share with anyone you can within the community! Any questions can be directed to hw.blacklivesmatter@gmail.com.
