Kristin Ant started this petition to Huntsville AL Educators-Residents and Lawmakers

The purpose of this petition is to assert our right to choose, as parents and taxpayers in Huntsville, AL, to send our children to school utilizing the traditional in-person face-to-face classroom setting or to select a virtual option based on what is best for each student. We support our local school system, teachers, and will support any effort to get our children back in the classroom. However, we believe no attempt to explore multiple options collaboratively is unacceptable.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, "We recognize that children learn best when physically present in the classroom. But children get much more than academics at school. They also learn social and emotional skills at school, get healthy meals and exercise, mental health support, and other services that cannot be easily replicated online." Additionally, the current AAP recommendation for screen time per day is limited to 1 hour or less.  Virtual learning will far exceed this medical recommendation.

AAP guidance based on what pediatricians and infectious disease specialists know about COVID-19 and kids. "Evidence so far suggests that children and adolescents are less likely to have symptoms or severe disease from infection. They also appear less likely to become infected or spread the virus."

The Centers for Disease Control also supports the option to send children back to school should families decide to do so.

As described on healthychildren.org, multiple options can be tried for those who prefer in-person learning, and we believe our children deserve this effort.

* Face coverings and hand hygiene.

* Space Desks

*Utilize outdoor spaces while the weather is appropriate.

*Teachers move classrooms, not students.

* Rotate schedules offering some form of hybrid in-person learning for each child and partial virtual learning.

*Give bus riders assigned seats and require them to wear a cloth face coverings while on the bus. Encourage students who have other ways to get to school to use those options.

*At school, mark hallways and stairs with one-way arrows on the floor to cut down on crowding in the halls.

*Outdoor activities are encouraged, so students should be allowed to use the playground in small groups.

*Flexibility to return to all virtual should a major outbreak occur.

If you would like to see an effort to offer a reasonable form of in-person learning for our children and support families' right to choose between virtual education and in-person learning, please join us in signing this petition. Those of us who sign this petition also support a teacher's right to remain on the virtual learning track should they choose this as the best option for themself and their family.
