Why this petition matters

Started by Helen McCall

The stretch of road from the George Hotel towards Chesters Roman Fort (B6318) has been problematic for a number of years. It is very well used and forms part of the official Hadrian’s Wall Trail, attracts thousands of walkers and tourists each year. Although the speed limit is 40 mph, many road users disregard this and drive without due care and attention. Sections of this footpath are very narrow and walkers must walk in single file. As a result, those with small children, prams or dogs are forced onto the road itself. There are often near misses with speeding or overtaking vehicles, and there is a significant risk to walkers, residents, tourists and other road users.

Based on the evidence above, the 40mph signage is not proving adequate as a calming measure for speed. Road users have a clear line of sight heading to and from the roundabout, and therefore accelerate, not taking into consideration the driveways, entrances and residents. Drivers have no understanding there are hidden entrances on this stretch of road.

There is severe risk of a serious accident and potential risk to life.

We support the prospect of speed calming measures, widening of footpaths and any other relevant solutions to reduce risk to pedestrians, local community, ramblers, road users and any other person using this stretch of road.

We call on the Parish Council to:

  • Investigate the possibility of a Speed Indicator Devices (SID’s).
  • Improve signage and road markings (double white lines, no overtaking etc).
  • Widen the footpath along the road.
  • Look at and work with local residents in improving the safety of the area.
