Budding Composer started this petition to Hummie Mann

For over half a decade, students have been subject to the pointless exercise of learning how to program click tracks using Auricle. While a beautiful historical artifact with no equal in finding the best tempo for a sequence of precise hit points, it's best use now is as a blunt instrument of self defense. Those of us in Hollywood have been met only with blanks stares or nervous laughter when mentioning this antique. Never mind those outside of Los Angeles, where the Auricle nary set foot.

Turns out, any DAW can create a click track with as much accuracy as the Auricle, and besides, who can afford to hire an Auricle operator these days? Instead, the single credit course wasted on Auricle may be spent on any of these other far more relevant skills:

  • Learning to mix
  • Learning to master
  • Learning to score "in the box"
  • Learning the range of a cimbasso
  • How to create your own sample libraries
  • How to talk to strangers
  • How to use Dorico and Cubase
  • How to use VEP
  • How to import MIDI and orchestrate by the standards of contemporary film practice
  • How to make your drums sound thicc as hell

The sad truth is that some things just aren't meant to last forever. We recommend that the corner of the room where the Auricle is stored be transformed into a small dining area where students can learn to make meals that cost less than 45 cents, and that the Auricle be donated to the nearest museum.

Thank you for your time and consideration. We hope the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program may continue to be the most relevant, state-of-the-art program of its kind. Have a nice day.
