Silence is Violence!

I am a white person, but I am not better than any other person, of any other color. I write to you today to encourage like-minded people to speak out against white-supremacy, against any discrimination they may see—there is no injustice too small to right through community and activism.

I write today to share with you an eye- (and heart- and mind-) opening experience. Before now, I’ve been afraid to speak. I didn’t believe I had the right words or enough understanding; I didn’t want to offend; and I also felt guilty for being a part of the problem. I was part of the problem by enjoying the comforts of a system that is set up to make me most comfortable, and by being naive of/turning a blind eye to the extreme disparity in quality of life between myself as a white person and countless others who don’t share the privilege my skin color allows. I do not fear for my life or for those of loved ones daily. I have realized that though I am no one special, and I am saying nothing new, I do need to say something, else I am perpetuating this harm on others by not speaking out and working against the atrocities I now recognize in the world.

So, I speak out now, because every second I don’t, every second you don’t, nothing changes, and the system continues, and Black people are murdered and worse; people of color face every discrimination from the very structures that the majority would have deemed necessary, before seeing these tragedies and FINALLY hearing all the voices crying out in pain and despair, and yes, in anger. Righteous anger at intolerable treatment.

Listen, we can no longer be content with being “non-racist,” happy with our diverse friends or attempts at awareness and non-discriminatory personal practices. We have to be anti-racist! We have to speak out against each inequality we see, and we have to look harder to find them.

Silence is Violence. I choose to no longer be quiet while any person is marginalized, hurt or killed. My voice is nothing on its own, but I hope to have moved you to join your voice with mine so that together we can uphold the ideals of civil rights and freedoms for ALL.

Please sign this petition to speak out against this extreme harm, to add your energy to change the world! Perhaps even author your own for the problems you are passionate about.  The time to be passive and quiet are gone. Together our voices will be strong enough to drive true change.
