Hello, My name is Sandra and I am a mother of two children. Unfortunately in 2011 one of my children was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. UC is a form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease otherwise known as IBD. You may also know disease as Crohn's disease which is another form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. For the last 5 years I have spent most of my time raising funds and awareness for this disease due to the lack of support many sufferers receive. This disease is known as an invisible disease and sufferers will often be abused while walking out of a disabled toilet because they may look well on the outside. IBD is also an incurable disease that has a huge impact on a sufferers every day life. This disease will often see people needing to go to the toilet several times a day. Unfortunately the ignorance of people can leave sufferers feeling embarrassed and humiliated whilst entering or leaving a disabled toilet. I run an organisation called Bottom's Up Fundraising Inc. This year our organisation ran a public Toilet campaign to show people that not all disabilities can be seen on the outside. The campaign reached over 800,000 people throughout Australia. I'm asking for changes to be made to disabled toilet signs as not all disabilities can be seen on the outside. If you turn people inside out they could tell you a different story and the disabled toilet sign to me and many others only recognises one disability. These changes have already happened in the UK so I think it's time to make these changes in Australia!
