Why this petition matters

Started by Ahha Aggaha

I do not wish to justify anything that the women did because it was obviously wrong and it has potentially endangered very many people.
But what I cannot stand for is the double standards when it comes to naming and shaming people who have disobeyed border restrictions. For example, people who were responsible for hotel quarantine in Melbourne and people who have gotten across the NSW Victoria border while filming it then later posting it on social media. They too have made very serious mistakes that have actually caused COVID clusters in NSW and yet they have not been named and shamed by the media. Another example of double standards  is the people behind the Ruby princess debacle, Why have they not been named and shamed?

These headlines have caused major backlash especially on social media platforms where by these women have been called ‘murderers’. Members of the public have been able to find their social media pages ( because of the media revealing their personal information) and they are continuing to harass and degrade these women. The women have also been subject to comments such as ‘Go back to your countries’ and have also received a lot of hate because they are black. People have went as far as criticising their Afrocentric facial features and saying they do not support the black lives matter movement anymore which is Invalid because being black has nothing to do with what they did.

The media publishing these inflammatory headlines about these girls has also had major implications on the black community especially in Brisbane. A lot of parents have reportedly said that they are afraid to send they children to school because they might be abused.

I call for for all the media outlets that participated in racial profiling to make a public apology regarding the misinformation that has been spread out throughout Australia.
